Alicent Hightower: The Queen of Westeros

Childhood and Family

Alicent Hightower was born into House Hightower, one of the oldest and most powerful houses in the Seven Kingdoms. Her father, Ser Otto Hightower, was the Hand of the King to Viserys I Targaryen. Alicent grew up in the Red Keep, where she befriended the young princess, Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Marriage to Viserys I

In 101 AC, Queen Aemma Arryn died during childbirth. King Viserys was left with a young daughter, Rhaenyra, and no heir to the Iron Throne. In an attempt to strengthen his claim and secure an ally in the Reach, Viserys married Alicent Hightower in 103 AC.

Queen of Westeros

As queen, Alicent was a strong supporter of her husband and his rule. She was also a key figure in the court, using her influence to promote the interests of House Hightower. Alicent had four children with Viserys: Aegon, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron.

Reign as Queen Regent

When Viserys died in 129 AC, Alicent became queen regent to her son, Aegon II Targaryen. She ruled for two years, during which time she faced challenges from Rhaenyra, who claimed the Iron Throne as her father's heir.

The Dance of the Dragons

The conflict between Rhaenyra and Aegon II escalated into a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Alicent played a key role in the war, leading the Greens faction against Rhaenyra's Blacks. When Aegon II was killed in 130 AC, Alicent surrendered and was imprisoned by Rhaenyra.

Aftermath of the War

After the war, Alicent was allowed to live out her remaining days in the Red Keep. She mourned the loss of her children and spent her time in solitude and prayer. Alicent's legacy is a complex one. She was a powerful and ambitious woman who played a major role in the history of Westeros. However, her actions also contributed to the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons, a devastating conflict that tore the Seven Kingdoms apart.
