Early Life and Career

Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She is the eldest of two children born to Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher, and Donald Harris, an economics professor.

Harris attended Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After graduating, she worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Political Career

In 2003, Harris was elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco. She served in that role until 2011, when she was elected as California's Attorney General.

Harris was elected as the 49th vice president of the United States in 2020, becoming the first woman, first Black woman, and first Asian-American to hold the office.
